Pizza
Italy
Also known as Pizza Margherita, Neapolitan Pizza
About Pizza
Pizza is a flat round of yeast dough topped with tomato sauce, cheese and other toppings and baked in a very hot oven. It comes from Naples in southern Italy and is now one of the most popular foods in the world.
Neapolitan pizza has a soft, thin center and a puffy, charred edge, and is baked for only about 60 to 90 seconds in a wood-fired oven. The classic Margherita is topped with tomato, mozzarella, fresh basil and olive oil, and is said to have been named after Queen Margherita of Italy in 1889.
Italian immigrants brought pizza to the United States, where many new styles were created, such as New York thin crust and Chicago deep dish. In 2017, UNESCO recognized the art of the Neapolitan pizza maker as intangible cultural heritage.
