About Lebkuchen

Lebkuchen is a soft, spiced German gingerbread made with honey, nuts and spices such as cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, ginger and allspice. It is a classic Christmas treat in Germany.

The most famous comes from Nuremberg, where Lebkuchen bakers were recorded as early as 1395. The best Nuremberg Lebkuchen (Elisenlebkuchen) are made with lots of ground almonds and hazelnuts and very little flour, baked on thin wafers and coated in chocolate or sugar glaze.

Lebkuchen hearts decorated with icing and messages are sold at German Christmas markets and Oktoberfest, often hung around the neck on a ribbon.
