About Currywurst
Currywurst is Germany's favorite fast food: a steamed and fried pork sausage cut into slices and covered in a curry-spiced ketchup, sprinkled with more curry powder.
It was invented in Berlin in 1949 by Herta Heuwer, who got ketchup and curry powder from British soldiers and mixed them into a sauce. Today, around 800 million currywursts are eaten each year in Germany.
It is sold from street stands (Imbiss), often with fries or a bread roll. Berlin, Hamburg and the Ruhr region all claim to make the best currywurst.
