About Kare Pan
Kare Pan, or Japanese curry bread, is a soft bread roll filled with thick Japanese curry, coated in panko breadcrumbs and deep-fried until golden and crunchy. It is one of Japan's most popular bakery snacks.
The filling is Japanese-style curry, mild and slightly sweet, made thick enough so it does not leak out of the dough. Some versions are baked instead of fried.
A Tokyo bakery is often credited with creating kare pan in 1927. Today it is sold in bakeries and convenience stores across Japan, and is a typical quick lunch or snack.
