About Gallo Pinto
Gallo Pinto is Costa Rica's national dish, a mix of rice and black beans fried together with onions, sweet peppers, cilantro and Salsa Lizano, a tangy local sauce.
The name means "spotted rooster", because of the speckled look of the beans and rice. It is traditionally made with leftover rice and beans from the day before.
Gallo pinto is a typical breakfast in Costa Rica, served with eggs, sour cream, fried plantains, cheese and tortillas. Costa Rica and Nicaragua both claim the dish, and Nicaragua makes it with red beans.
