About Dulce de Leche

Dulce de Leche, meaning "milk candy", is a thick, caramel-like spread made by slowly heating milk and sugar until it turns golden brown and creamy. It is one of the most loved sweets in Argentina and across Latin America.

The milk is stirred for hours while the water evaporates and the sugars brown. A pinch of baking soda helps the color and texture, and vanilla is often added. Some people make it by simmering a can of sweetened condensed milk in water.

Several countries, including Argentina, Uruguay and Chile, claim it as their own. In Argentina it is spread on toast, used to fill alfajores (sandwich cookies), crêpes and cakes, and is a popular ice cream flavor. Similar sweets are called cajeta in Mexico and doce de leite in Brazil.
