About Tamales
Tamales are a traditional Mexican dish of masa (corn dough) filled with meat, cheese, vegetables or chili, wrapped in a corn husk or banana leaf and steamed.
They date back thousands of years to the Aztecs and Mayans, who carried them as portable food for hunters and warriors. Common fillings include pork in red chili sauce, chicken in green salsa and cheese with jalapeños; sweet tamales are also made.
Making tamales is often a family event called a tamalada, especially at Christmas. They are also eaten on Candlemas Day (2 February) and are popular across Latin America.
