Stollen, a dish from Germany

Stollen

Germany

Also known as Christstollen, Dresdner Stollen

About Stollen

Stollen is a German Christmas fruit bread made with a rich yeast dough of butter, raisins, candied peel and almonds, often with a log of marzipan in the middle. It is brushed with butter and covered in powdered sugar.

Its shape and white coating are said to represent the baby Jesus wrapped in swaddling clothes. Stollen keeps for weeks, and its flavor improves as it rests.

The city of Dresden is famous for its Stollen, and its version, Dresdner Christstollen, is protected. Dresden even holds a Stollen festival with a giant loaf.
