About Shepherd's Pie
Shepherd's Pie is a British comfort dish of minced lamb cooked in gravy with onions, carrots and peas, topped with a layer of mashed potato and baked until the top is golden and crisp.
The name comes from the use of lamb, since shepherds look after sheep. When the pie is made with beef, it is traditionally called cottage pie. Worcestershire sauce, tomato purée and herbs add flavor to the meat.
The dish became popular in the 18th and 19th centuries as a way to use leftover roast meat. Today it is a family favorite in the UK and Ireland, often made with fresh mince.
