About Eton Mess
Eton Mess is a simple English dessert of fresh strawberries, broken meringue and whipped cream, gently folded together in a deliberately messy heap. It is light, sweet and quick to make.
It is named after Eton College, the English boys' school, where it has been served at the annual cricket match against Harrow School since the 19th century. One popular story says it began when a pavlova was dropped, but the dessert is older than that legend.
Eton Mess is a classic British summer dessert, especially during strawberry season and Wimbledon. Some cooks use raspberries or other berries, or add a little strawberry purée or liqueur.
