About Scotch Egg
The Scotch Egg is a British snack made from a hard- or soft-boiled egg wrapped in sausage meat, coated in breadcrumbs and deep-fried until golden. It is served hot or cold.
Despite the name, it is not Scottish. The London department store Fortnum & Mason claims to have invented it in 1738 as a travel snack for wealthy customers. Others believe it was inspired by the Indian dish nargisi kofta.
Scotch eggs are popular for picnics, pub snacks and lunchboxes in the UK. Modern gastropubs often serve them with a runny yolk, along with mustard or a chutney.
