About Moussaka
Moussaka is a baked Greek dish of layered eggplant, often potato, and a spiced meat sauce, topped with a thick, golden layer of béchamel sauce. It is one of Greece's best-known dishes.
The eggplant slices are fried or roasted, then layered with a sauce of ground beef or lamb cooked with tomato, onion, garlic, wine and spices like cinnamon and allspice. The creamy béchamel on top puffs and browns in the oven.
The modern Greek version was popularized by chef Nikolaos Tselementes in the 1920s, who added the French-style béchamel. Similar dishes without the béchamel exist across the Balkans and the Middle East. Moussaka is often served at family gatherings and Sunday lunches.
