Gyros
Greece
Also known as Gyro, Pita Gyros
About Gyros
Gyros is a Greek dish of seasoned meat, usually pork or chicken, cooked on a vertical rotating spit and sliced thin. The name comes from the Greek word for "turn".
It is usually served in a warm pita bread with tomato, onion, fries and tzatziki, a cool sauce of yogurt, cucumber and garlic. It can also be served on a plate with pita and salad.
Gyros is related to the Turkish döner kebab and came to Greece with refugees from Asia Minor in the 1920s. Today it is one of Greece's most popular street foods.
