About Koeksisters

Koeksisters are South African braided doughnuts that are deep-fried and then plunged into ice-cold syrup, so they are crispy outside and sticky and syrupy inside.

The syrup is flavored with lemon juice, ginger and cinnamon. The name comes from the Dutch word koek, meaning cake, and possibly from "sissen", the sizzling sound they make while frying.

The braided Afrikaner koeksister is different from the Cape Malay "koesister", which is spiced, round and covered in coconut. There is even a koeksister monument in the town of Orania.
