About Bobotie
Bobotie is a South African dish of spiced minced meat baked with a golden custard topping of eggs and milk. It is one of South Africa's best-known dishes.
The mince is cooked with onions, curry powder, turmeric and bread soaked in milk, and sweetened with raisins, chutney or apricot jam. Bay or lemon leaves are pressed into the custard before baking.
Bobotie is closely linked with the Cape Malay community, whose cooking has Indonesian and Malaysian roots, and it blends sweet and savory flavors. It is served with yellow rice with raisins, chutney and sliced banana.
