About Bunny Chow

Bunny Chow is a South African street food of a hollowed-out loaf of white bread filled with curry. It comes from the Indian community of Durban.

The curry can be mutton, chicken, beans or vegetables, cooked in the spicy Durban style. The scooped-out bread is often placed on top as a "lid" and used to dip into the curry.

Its exact origins are unclear, but it is believed to have been created in Durban around the 1940s as an easy way to sell takeaway curry to workers. A quarter loaf is the most common portion. Despite the name, it contains no rabbit.
