About Greek Salad
Greek Salad, or horiatiki ("village salad"), is a simple salad of ripe tomatoes, cucumber, red onion, green pepper and Kalamata olives, topped with a thick slab of feta cheese. It is dressed with olive oil, a little red wine vinegar and dried oregano.
A true horiatiki has no lettuce. The vegetables are cut into large chunks, and the feta is usually served in one piece on top rather than crumbled.
It is eaten across Greece, especially in summer, when tomatoes are at their best, and it is on the menu of almost every taverna. Diners often dip bread into the juices at the bottom of the bowl, a habit Greeks call papara.
