Golabki (cabbage roll)

Poland

Also known as Gołąbki, Stuffed Cabbage Rolls

About Golabki (cabbage roll)

Gołąbki are Polish cabbage rolls: soft, blanched cabbage leaves wrapped around a filling of minced meat and rice, then baked or simmered in tomato sauce. The name means "little pigeons", maybe because of their small, rounded shape.

The filling is usually ground pork or beef mixed with cooked rice or barley, onion and seasoning. The rolls are packed tightly in a pot or baking dish and cooked slowly so the cabbage becomes tender.

Gołąbki are a classic Polish home-cooked dish, often served at family gatherings and holidays with tomato or mushroom sauce. Similar cabbage rolls are found across Central and Eastern Europe, the Balkans and the Middle East.
