About Bagel

The bagel is a ring-shaped bread roll with a shiny crust and a dense, chewy middle. Its special texture comes from a two-step method: the shaped dough is briefly boiled in water before it is baked, which sets the crust and keeps the crumb tight.

Bagels are believed to come from the Jewish communities of Kraków, in Poland, where a 1610 community record mentions them. Jewish immigrants later carried them to North America, and New York and Montreal became famous for two different styles.

Plain bagels are often topped with sesame or poppy seeds, and the classic New York filling is cream cheese with smoked salmon, red onion and capers. Today bagels are eaten across the world for breakfast or lunch, sliced and toasted or eaten fresh from the oven.
