About Chicken Tikka Masala

Chicken Tikka Masala is pieces of marinated, grilled chicken (chicken tikka) served in a creamy, spiced tomato sauce. The chicken is marinated in yogurt and spices, then cooked in a tandoor oven or under a grill until slightly charred.

The sauce is made from tomatoes, onions, ginger, garlic and cream, seasoned with garam masala, cumin and coriander. It is mild and rich, with a characteristic orange color.

Its origins are debated. It is closely related to Indian butter chicken, but many people believe the dish as we know it was created in Indian restaurants in Britain in the 1960s or 70s. It became so popular that it was once called Britain's "true national dish", and it is served in Indian restaurants around the world with rice or naan.
