About Onigiri
Onigiri are Japanese rice balls made from white rice shaped into triangles or rounds and often wrapped with a strip of nori seaweed. They usually have a filling in the center.
Popular fillings include salted salmon, pickled plum (umeboshi), tuna with mayonnaise and seasoned kelp. The salt and fillings help preserve the rice.
Onigiri have been eaten in Japan for centuries as a portable food for travelers and soldiers. Today they are sold in every convenience store and are a lunchbox favorite.
