Mille-Feuille
France
Also known as Napoleon, Vanilla Slice
About Mille-Feuille
Mille-Feuille is a classic French pastry made from three layers of crisp, flaky puff pastry filled with two layers of vanilla pastry cream. The name means "a thousand leaves", describing the many thin layers in the pastry.
The top is usually glazed with white fondant icing and decorated with a feathered pattern of chocolate lines. Some versions are dusted with icing sugar instead, or filled with whipped cream and fruit.
Mille-feuille became popular in France in the 19th century. It is also known as Napoleon in the United States, and versions are sold in bakeries around the world under many different names.
