About Hamburger
The Hamburger is a patty of ground beef, grilled or fried, served in a soft sliced bun with toppings such as lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles and cheese, plus ketchup and mustard. It is one of the best-known foods in the world.
Its name comes from the German city of Hamburg, whose emigrants brought the habit of eating minced beef steaks to the United States in the 19th century. Several American towns and cooks claim to have first put the patty in a bun, around the 1890s and early 1900s.
Burgers became a symbol of American fast food in the 20th century with the rise of drive-ins and fast-food chains. Today they range from simple diner burgers to gourmet versions with special beef, cheeses and sauces.
