About Cheesesteak
The Cheesesteak is a sandwich from Philadelphia made with thinly sliced ribeye steak cooked on a griddle with onions, topped with melted cheese and served in a long, soft hoagie roll.
It was created in the 1930s by Pat Olivieri, a hot dog vendor who put grilled beef on a roll. Cheese was added later. The classic choices are Cheez Whiz, provolone or American cheese.
Pat's King of Steaks and Geno's Steaks, across the street from each other in South Philadelphia, are famous rivals. Locals order by saying the cheese and "wit" or "witout" onions.
