About General Tsos Chicken
General Tso's Chicken is a sweet, spicy and tangy dish of deep-fried chicken pieces coated in a glossy sauce of soy sauce, vinegar, sugar, garlic, ginger and dried chilies.
It is named after Zuo Zongtang, a 19th-century military leader from Hunan province, but he had nothing to do with it. The dish was created in Taiwan in the 1950s by Peng Chang-kuei, a chef from Hunan, who brought it to New York when he opened a restaurant there in 1973. American versions made it sweeter.
Today it is one of the most popular dishes in Chinese-American restaurants. It is often served with steamed broccoli and white rice.
