About Char Siu

Char Siu is Cantonese barbecued pork, glazed with a sticky, sweet and savory marinade that turns it a deep red. It is one of the classics of Cantonese roast meats.

Pork shoulder or belly is marinated in honey, five-spice powder, hoisin sauce, soy sauce and red fermented bean curd, then roasted on long forks or hooks. The name literally means "fork roasted".

Char siu is sold in Hong Kong and Chinatowns around the world, hanging in the windows of roast meat shops. It is served on rice or noodles and used as a filling for steamed buns (char siu bao).
