About Chivito

The Chivito is Uruguay's national sandwich: a thin, tender beef steak in a soft bun, piled with mozzarella, ham, bacon, a fried egg, lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise. It is huge and very filling.

It was created in 1946 at a restaurant in Punta del Este, when a customer from Argentina asked for goat meat (chivito means "little goat"). The cook had none and served a beef sandwich instead, and the name stuck.

There is also a plate version, chivito al plato, served without bread and with fries and salad. Chivitos are sold in restaurants and snack bars across Uruguay.
