About BeaverTails
BeaverTails are Canadian fried dough pastries, stretched by hand into a flat, oval shape that resembles a beaver's tail. They are fried until golden and puffy, then topped while still hot.
The pastry was first sold under that name in 1978 at a fair in Ontario, and the BeaverTails company grew from there. Today the pastries are sold at ski resorts, winter festivals and on the Rideau Canal Skateway in Ottawa, where skaters stop for something warm.
The classic topping is cinnamon sugar with a squeeze of lemon, but you can also find them with chocolate hazelnut spread, maple butter, banana and many other toppings. They are a popular Canadian treat, especially in winter.
