About Banh Mi

Banh Mi is the famous Vietnamese sandwich: a light, crackly baguette filled with layers of savory meats, pâté, mayonnaise and crunchy pickled vegetables. In Vietnamese, bánh mì simply means bread, but worldwide it now refers to the sandwich.

The baguette arrived with the French during the colonial period, and Vietnamese bakers adapted it with an airier crumb and thinner crust. Fillings show a mix of French and Vietnamese tastes: pork pâté and cold cuts alongside pickled carrot and daikon, fresh cilantro, cucumber, sliced chilies and a splash of soy or Maggi seasoning.

Saigon street vendors made it popular from the 1950s, and Vietnamese emigrants later carried it around the world. Popular versions include grilled pork, meatballs, fried egg and tofu, and the city of Hội An is well known for its banh mi stalls.
