About Bacalhau à Brás

Bacalhau à Brás is a popular Portuguese dish made with shredded salt cod, onions and thin, crispy fried potato sticks, all bound together with softly scrambled eggs. It is garnished with black olives and chopped parsley.

Salt cod (bacalhau) is a staple in Portugal, and it is said there are 365 ways to cook it, one for every day of the year. The cod is soaked for a day or two to remove the salt, then flaked and cooked with onions and garlic in olive oil.

The dish is named after a tavern owner named Brás from Lisbon's Bairro Alto district. It is quick to make, comforting and is a favorite in Portuguese homes and restaurants.
