About Pastel de Nata
Pastel de Nata is a Portuguese custard tart with a crispy, flaky puff pastry shell and a creamy egg custard filling, baked at a very high temperature until the top is blistered and dark.
It was created by monks at the Jerónimos Monastery in Belém, Lisbon, before the 19th century. When the monastery closed in 1834, they sold the recipe to a sugar refinery, which opened the famous Pastéis de Belém bakery in 1837.
The tarts are dusted with cinnamon and powdered sugar and eaten warm with a coffee. They are sold across Portugal and in Portuguese communities worldwide.
