About Tteokbokki
Tteokbokki is a popular Korean street food of chewy rice cakes simmered in a sweet, spicy red sauce made with gochujang (chili paste). It is often cooked with fish cakes, boiled eggs and scallions.
The cylindrical rice cakes (garae-tteok) are soft and chewy. The sauce is made from gochujang, chili flakes, sugar and soy sauce.
In the royal court, tteokbokki was a non-spicy dish made with soy sauce. The spicy version was created in the 1950s in Seoul's Sindang-dong, now famous for tteokbokki restaurants.
