About Khao Niaow Ma Muang

Khao Niaow Ma Muang, or Mango Sticky Rice, is one of Thailand's most famous desserts: sweet, chewy sticky rice soaked in coconut milk, served with slices of ripe mango.

The glutinous rice is steamed and then mixed with warm coconut milk, sugar and a pinch of salt, so it absorbs the rich, sweet-salty sauce. A little more salted coconut cream is poured on top, and crunchy toasted mung beans or sesame seeds are often sprinkled over.

It is especially popular in the hot season from April to June, when Thai mangoes such as nam dok mai are at their sweetest. It is sold by street vendors across Thailand and is also eaten in Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam.
