About Hot Dog

The Hot Dog is a grilled or boiled sausage, usually a frankfurter or wiener, served in a long, soft, partly sliced bun. It is topped with mustard, ketchup, relish, onions or sauerkraut and is one of America's most iconic street foods.

The sausages came from Germany and Austria, whose emigrants sold them in American cities in the 19th century. Selling them in buns made them easy to eat on the street, at fairs and at baseball games. Coney Island in New York became famous for them.

Many US cities have their own style. Chicago hot dogs come with yellow mustard, bright green relish, onions, tomato, pickle, sport peppers and celery salt, but never ketchup. New York hot dogs are often served with sauerkraut and onions from a street cart.
