About Croque Monsieur
Croque Monsieur is a French grilled ham and cheese sandwich, usually topped with béchamel sauce and more grated Gruyère, then baked or grilled until bubbling and golden.
It first appeared on menus of Parisian cafés in the early 20th century. The name comes from the French verb croquer, meaning to crunch, and monsieur, meaning mister.
A croque madame is the same sandwich topped with a fried egg, said to look like a lady's hat. They are served in cafés and brasseries across France, often with a green salad.
