About Chili con Carne

Chili con Carne is a spicy stew of beef with chili peppers, cumin, garlic, onions and tomatoes, often with kidney beans. The name means "chili with meat" in Spanish.

It comes from Texas, where cooks in San Antonio, known as "chili queens", sold it on the streets in the 19th century. Texans traditionally make it without beans, and it is the official state dish of Texas.

Chili is a favorite at cook-offs and football games across the United States. It is served with rice, cornbread or crackers and topped with cheese, sour cream and onions, and is also used on hot dogs and fries.
