Burek

Also known as Börek, Byrek
About Burek
Burek is a flaky, savory pastry made from thin sheets of dough layered or rolled around a filling and baked until golden. It is eaten across Turkey, the Balkans and the Middle East, where it is known as börek, burek or byrek.
Popular fillings include white cheese such as feta, spinach with cheese, potatoes, and ground meat with onions. The dough is brushed with butter or oil, and sometimes with a mixture of egg and milk, which keeps the layers rich and crisp.
The pastry spread throughout the Ottoman Empire, and each region developed its own shapes, from large round spirals to long rolls and square trays. In Bosnia, "burek" means only the meat-filled version, and it is often eaten for breakfast with yogurt.
