About Bakso

Bakso is an Indonesian meatball soup. The meatballs are made from finely ground beef mixed with tapioca starch, which gives them a smooth, bouncy texture. They are served in a clear, savory beef broth with noodles.

A bowl of bakso usually includes yellow noodles or rice vermicelli, tofu, bok choy and sometimes fried wontons, topped with fried shallots and celery leaves. Diners season it themselves with sweet soy sauce, chili sauce and vinegar.

The dish shows Chinese influence, and the name comes from a Hokkien word for minced meat. It is sold by street vendors pushing carts across Indonesia, and is one of the country's most popular comfort foods.
