About Kachumbari
Kachumbari is a fresh salad of diced tomatoes and onions, popular in Kenya, Tanzania and across East Africa. It is often flavored with chopped coriander, green chili and lemon or lime juice.
The onions are sometimes rinsed or soaked in salted water to soften their bite. Cucumber, avocado or carrot are sometimes added. The name may come from the Indian kachumber salad, reflecting the long connection between East Africa and India.
Kachumbari is the classic side dish for nyama choma (grilled meat), pilau rice and ugali, the region's maize staple. Its freshness and acidity balance rich, grilled and starchy foods.
