Also known as Bao, Steamed Buns
About Baozi
Baozi are fluffy steamed buns from China made from a soft yeast dough wrapped around a filling. The top is pleated into a neat swirl, and the buns are cooked in bamboo steamers until they puff up white and pillowy.
The most common filling is seasoned pork mince with scallions, ginger, soy sauce and sesame oil, often mixed with cabbage for juiciness. There are many other kinds too, including char siu (barbecued pork), vegetables with mushrooms and tofu, and sweet red bean or custard.
Baozi are a classic Chinese breakfast and street food, sold piping hot from stacked steamers at stalls across the country. Similar buns are eaten throughout East and Southeast Asia, and they are a regular part of dim sum.
