About Kouign-Amann
Kouign-Amann is a rich, buttery pastry from Brittany in north-west France. Its name means "butter cake" in the Breton language.
The dough is layered with lots of salted butter and sugar, folded several times like croissant dough. During baking, the sugar caramelizes, creating a crispy, sticky crust and a soft inside.
It was created in the town of Douarnenez around 1860. Today kouign-amann is sold in bakeries across France, and smaller versions are popular around the world.
